Trivia # 4

Cogito ergo sum[a] is a Latin philosophical proposition by René Descartes usually translated into English as "I think, therefore I am". The phrase originally appeared in French as je pense, donc je suis in his Discourse on the Method, so as to reach a wider audience than Latin would have allowed.[1] It appeared in Latin in his later Principles of Philosophy. As Descartes explained, "we cannot doubt of our existence while we doubt...." A fuller form, penned by Antoine Léonard Thomas, aptly captures Descartes’s intent: dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum ("I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am").[b] The concept is also sometimes known as the cogito.

If you suffer from cardiovascular problems, bundle up this winter, especially in the southern hemisphere where winter is coming this month of June. A recent study from Samuel J. Mann, MD, hypertension specialist and associate professor of clinical medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York City, and author of Healing Hypertension: A Revolutionary New Approach (Wiley), warns that low temperatures and sudden cold snaps can bring on heart attacks in people with high blood pressure.

WHEN SYNTHETIC MEDICINE’S CURE IS WORSE THAN THE DISEASE

Sometimes some drugs can cause more trouble than the disease they’re meant to heal. This is often said about prednisone, the corticosteroid used to treat a variety of inflammatory ailments
-arthritis, asthma, colitis and some cancers- and to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. Its nasty side effects-from a swollen “moon face” to increased infections-are legendary. But many people don’t know is that there’s a medicinal mushroom known as reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) that could, in some cases, do as good a job without wreaking havoc on the body.
